WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS NEW MATERIAL?
Piñatex®, vegetable leather made from pineapple leaves, is a sustainable alternative to animal leather. We could say that it is a vegetable leather that avoids the negative effects of animal leather manufacturing, mainly regarding tanning processes, which normally involve highly polluting heavy metals such as chrome.
HOW IS PIÑATEX® MANUFACTURED?
Piñatex® is made naturally from the leaves of the pineapple, the disposable part of the plant. The process to extract the fibers needs hardly any water. In addition, once the fibers are obtained, the remaining biomass can be used as fertilizer.
The creator of this new innovative material is Carmen Hijosa, who was inspired by some traditional philippine clothing made with these fibers, the Barong Tagalong.
Farming communities from Philippines carry out the process of cultivation, harvesting, washing and degumming of the fibres and the final part of the material processing is done in Spain.
The result of this process is a sustainable material that can be used in many different ways.
